The Heat Engines Laboratory is equipped with experimental setups related to thermal engineering, heat engines, and refrigeration systems. The laboratory helps students understand the principles of thermal engineering and enables them to perform performance analysis of heat engines and refrigeration systems through practical experiments.
The Service and Maintenance Laboratory provides practical exposure to automobile components and maintenance techniques. Students learn the servicing, inspection, and maintenance procedures of various automobile parts through hands-on training.
The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory contains experimental setups related to fluid mechanics, fluid machinery, and pneumatics. The laboratory helps students develop a strong understanding of fluid behavior and hydraulic machinery through practical experiments.
YUME is an innovative voluntary initiative aimed at developing life skills among young adults. The program focuses on building resilience, leadership qualities, and responsible citizenship. It is supported by professionals from different sectors of society who are committed to mentoring and guiding students towards a better future.
The department newsletter highlights the major activities, achievements, and initiatives carried out by students, faculty members, and staff during each semester. It serves as a platform to showcase academic, technical, and co-curricular developments within the department.
The Mechanical Engineering Association, established in the year 2000, is a student-driven organization that organizes technical events, seminars, workshops, and industrial visits throughout the academic year. The association helps students enhance their technical competence and professional skills.
YUME is a voluntary life-skills development program designed to empower young adults and nurture responsible citizens. The first cohort of the program was inaugurated by the District Collector, Ms. G. Priyanka, on 24 March 2025 at 9:30 AM. The initiative focuses on personal development, leadership, and community responsibility.

Mechanical Engineering
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Government Polytechnic College, Palakkad. We started our journey in the year of 1980 and offered a Diploma in Foundry Technology program. Over the last four decades, we have grown our expertise and competence in the core Mechanical Engineering education.
The sanctioned students strength is 60 per year. Our department offers science-based diploma in engineering curriculum under the Directorate of Technical Education. The primary focus of our curriculum is to impart technical know-how to students, promote their problem solving skills and innovation of new technologies. The course contents are periodically updated for introducing new scientific and technological developments by the State Board of Technical Education, Kerala.Our department has a distinguished record in both teaching, result and placement. We have gained first place in the results many times in our state. Faculty members have excellent academic credentials and are recruited by the state level agency.

The department offers a three year diploma course that consists of core civil engineering subjects such a Structural Design and Engineering, Surveying, Quantity Surveying, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Construction materials & Engineering and Building Planning and Drawing.
Apart from these regular subjects, students are also trained to operate Total Station and work with soft wares involving Computer Aided Drafting, Structural Analysis and Design, Estimation, Project Planning and Implementation and GIS. The Laboratories in the Department are well equipped to enable practical learning with better understanding and to ensure the optimal consolidation of their knowledge.
Since 1984, we have maintained a consistent academic track record of being placed amongst the first five colleges in the state. The department has played a vital role in moulding the students to excel in their carrier. The alumini of the institution have been employed in various Government Departments and other firms in Private sector. The entire diploma course is designed in a manner that it would groom the students to become efficient field supervisors who would strive to maintain the highest standards in civil construction. The faculty members are recruited by the State Public Service Commission and are competent to deliver a positive learning experience with their excellent academic credentials and industry expertise. The technical staffs are also proficient in their respective fields. The Department also offers consultancy service to various stakeholders including Government Departments and Private firm and have been able to generate a revenue of about Rs. 5 lakhs within past two years.
